Horizon: BENTHOS
THE FLOOR SCRAWLS
BENTHOS records the bottom of the Ledger: substrate, muck, sediment, benthic witnesses, aquatic insects, freshwater sponge, and the small biological receipts that survive below the surface.
The record may begin in familiar water, but it can widen wherever the bottom speaks clearly enough to be entered. Streambed, pond floor, ditch, seep, backwater, or borrowed water all belong when the evidence holds.
